Nurturing American Staffy Helps Owners In Fostering Other Dogs And Even Cats

Nurturing American Staffy Helps Owners In Fostering Other Dogs And Even Cats

Sarah Jefferson February 23, 2023

Zura, a blue American Staffordshire Terrier, has been nicknamed Mumma for her remarkable foster job with many litters of puppies. Couple Christopher Melotti and his husband Scott adopted the pup from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, New South Wales five years ago. RSPCA NSW is an Australian charity that takes care of and rehomes neglected animals.

Zura was just over a year old when they felt that she needed company. They were still renting at the time, so instead of adopting again, they called the RSPCA team and requested fostering. They were unsure how Zura would react at first, so they were surprised to discover that she was a natural mom. She enjoys nurturing puppies and teaching them manners to make sure they grow up healthy, happy, and well-behaved.

To date, Mumma Zura has cared for around 200 puppies. She took in those that required a break from the shelter due to behavioral concerns, those involved in court proceedings, abuse victims, and even one deaf puppy. She has also cared for four kittens.

Zura has not only brought company, devotion, and love to Chris and Scott, but she has also assisted them in giving back through fostering. She is essential in the rehabilitation of many foster dogs, instilling trust and confidence in them.

Chris stated that it is fulfilling to provide a home for dogs and witness their growth and development. It was difficult for him and Scott to let go of their fosters at first. However, after doing it so frequently, they quickly understood that it's just like a job.

The couple is only there for a short time to love and care for their fosters before they move to their permanent homes. And not long after, they will get another foster. Chris suggests fostering for folks who love animals but aren't ready to commit. He went on to say that it's a terrific opportunity to give back while enjoying a house full of pets.
