The streets of Nuwara Eliya used to be home to tiny Lek Lek. She had no family to take care of her and relied only on herself for survival. Life was not at all easy for her, so she decided to change the narrative.
Lek Lek started by wagging her tail at the people she would meet on the street. It was her way of getting them to notice her and, hopefully, get them to adopt her. She would look up whenever a human would pass by her to catch their eye. Unfortunately, the passersby were too busy to notice the tiny pooch who was wagging her tail to get their attention.
Mission accomplished
All of her efforts paid off when Lek Chailert and other rescuers from Elephant Nature Park saw her. They were on an elephant research trip at the time. Their group was just passing through Nuwara Eliya when they came across Lek Lek.
Little did they know that the puppy saw them too. She decided to follow them around to get them to adopt her. They eventually caved and decided to bring her home with them.
Home at last
Thushara, the group’s driver, volunteered to look after Lek Lek. He bought a blanket for her and bathed her when they arrived at the hotel. He also propped his luggage open so she would have a comfortable bed to sleep in.
Lek Lek was so grateful to Thushara for giving her a forever home. She was quite proud of herself for pushing through despite the number of rejections she received.
Aside from Thushara, Lek Lek was also grateful to Chailert and her other rescuers. She also got to thank them personally when they reunited some years after their first meeting. Watch what happened during the reunion in the video below:
