The Chernobyl nuclear disaster was the worst nuclear accident in history. Over one hundred and fifteen thousand people were exposed. These people were asked to evacuate the area.
They were asked to give up all of their belongings, even their houses. The people left everything behind, including their pets.
The Chernobyl Exclusion Zone is a large area of about eighteen miles. There are a lot of stray dogs everywhere, which makes it impossible to save each one of them.
Because of radioactivity, the dogs that survived the nuclear accident were contaminated. After more than thirty years, the dog's population has drastically grown. The number of dogs have grown to more than a thousand.
The government planned to get rid of all of the animals living there since they were all exposed. These dogs who were living happily with their families suddenly became homeless. Suddenly they were all alone in the world.
These dogs are still not allowed to leave the area. It was also illegal to rescue them. There are already a few people who work on the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone. These workers would sometimes try to feed the dogs. Unfortunately, it is never enough.
People from SPCA International conducted a program to help the dogs live comfortably. The volunteers would scan the dogs for radioactive particles. Most of the dogs are surprisingly not contaminated.
Even when they are, radioactive particles wash off with soap and water. Once they are not dangerous anymore, it was safe to pet and snuggle with them.
The government gave SPCA International a special permit to rescue the dogs. So far, they have rescued over forty dogs. These dogs now belong to loving families.
Because of the efforts of the people from SPCA International, the dogs got a chance to live a normal life. They get a chance to be provided and loved.
