A Jack Russel and Corgi mix was found as a stray on the streets of Busan, South Korea. He was very tired and weak from hunger.
The Good Samaritan who found him took him in and nursed him back to health. Through the help of a nonprofit dog rescue organization called Korean K9 Rescue, the dog was sent to New York City for foster care.
The foster parent was a musician and quickly discovered that the dog had an inclination to music. He would post videos showing the dog singing along while he played the clarinet. The videos caught the attention of Mikaela Bennet, a Canadian singer, and actor who was based in New York City.
Mikaela thought that the dog would be perfect for her family and officially adopted him. She named him Birks after an American Jazz trumpeter named John Birks Gillespie.
Birks immediately burst into a song to accompany the album Mikaela put on. They noticed that Birks would listen attentively to a piece of music. Then he would sing along if he liked it.
Whenever Mikaela practiced singing at home, Birks would try to sing louder or higher than her. He also liked singing along to the piano when his dad, David, played in the morning. The couple did not mind having their pet cut in during practice at home. It was a little difficult, but it was also fun.
On Birks’ second year with his new family, they found out that he had a cancerous tumor. They immediately scheduled a surgery to take it out. He was able to pull through and was back on his feet in no time. Then he continued crashing his parents’ practice sessions.
Mikaela and David were very happy to have a dog who loved music as much as they did.
