Rescuing stray dogs is not an easy task. A lot of these dogs had horrible experiences with people, which results in being scared of human contact. They will get aggressive because of fear and rescuers need to be extra careful around them.
For Eldad Hagar of Hope For Paws, who is also very experienced in rescuing dogs, he came across an injured pit bull who’s very scared and even aggressive. The rescue effort started when Eldad received a call from someone asking for help for an injured pit bull. The person who called Eldad stated that the pit bull was last seen limping near a freeway ramp.
Eldad went on his way to find the injured dog. When he saw the dog, it was laying down next to a wall and refused to move. When he got closer, the dog started acting aggressively and started barking. Understandably, Eldad tried to soothe the scared animal by talking gently to her. He also offered the pit bull food to win her trust.
Eventually, Eldad was able to get a gentle snare around its neck. He got the pit bull to crawl out of the den she was living in by giving her food. Eldad saw how badly the pit bull was injured. He decided to name the pit bull, Yara.
As Eldad guided Yara near his car, she eventually became exhausted and laid down next to the vehicle. Eldad knew that Yara’s in a lot of pain and he also knew how badly she’s injured. He tied the dog to his car so he can get a bowl of water for Yara. However, as soon as he took his eyes off Yara, Yara started to chew off the gentle snare.
Yara eventually broke free and headed back to her den. Eldad called Loreta Frankonyte to assist him in the rescue. They were able to get two more gentle snares on Yara’s neck, and they guided her back out next to their vehicle. The two rescuers got a cage out and were able to get Yara inside.
The injured dog was still aggressive and barked at the rescuers. They were able to get Yara to an animal hospital where her injuries were treated. Unfortunately, her front leg was crushed and were impossible to restore. The vet decided to amputate the injured leg.
When Yara woke up from surgery, Eldad was finally able to pet her. She felt no more pain, which was caused by the injured leg, and she stayed for a few more weeks for therapy to learn walking with three legs.
After a few weeks in the hospital, Yara was taken to a foster home where she learned to trust humans again. All the aggression from Yara disappeared, and she loves her foster parents. Yara came out of her shell and showed people how she loves to run around and play. Even with three legs, Yara can still run fast, and she loves her life in her new home. Here’s a video showing the amazing rescue and how Yara learned to trust humans again.
