Goldendoodle Born With Spinal Deformity Gets A Second Chance At Life With New Custom Wheelchair

Two weeks after Goldendoodle Benjamin Bunny was born, his breeder noticed something odd about him. He had trouble putting weight on his hind legs, making it hard for him to walk and nurse from his mom. Because of his lack of mobility, the breeder decided to surrender him to Bosley’s Place, an animal rescue service in Smyrna, Georgia.

The staff willingly took him in, and shortly after, they sent him to a vet to get checked. That was when they learned that Benjamin Bunny had a severe spinal deformity. The condition affected a portion of his back down to the entire lower half of his body, but fortunately, he wasn’t experiencing any sort of pain.

After learning about his condition, the staff worked on nursing him back to health, bottle-feeding him regularly and keeping an eye on him 24/7. When Benjamin was strong enough, they then sent him to live with his foster fur mom, Beth Williams.

Beth initially worked on therapy with the Goldendoodle as soon as she brought him home. However, after weeks of little change in his mobility, she realized that he would never walk normally. The foster fur mom didn’t want to leave Benjamin like that, though, as she wanted to give him some degree of freedom.

Fortunately, she came across Walkin’ Pets, a company that provides handicapped animals with mobility equipment. They were able to create a custom wheelchair for Benjamin that was adjustable enough to fit his growing body. Almost immediately after putting the wheelchair on, the pup decided to take it for a quick test run.

It was quite safe to say that he fell in love with his new gear right away and went for hours running around with his foster fur siblings. Although Benjamin might not ever gain strength on his back legs, Beth and the shelter staff were happy to see him walk and run on his own now. Watch the playful pup’s story here.
