Stories about owners dumping their dogs are no longer new. While this would seem reasonable for some, it is still alarming and saddening since dogs are also capable of feeling.
Nova is no stranger to this experience. A year ago, Nova was dumped by her owners at a local dog shelter in Kansas. She was still a puppy then. The owners just told the volunteers of the center that they could no longer take the dog under their care.
But while this may be the case, Nova is somewhat still lucky because she was sent to the dog shelter and was not left on the street to die. This, however, is still unacceptable since dogs deserve better treatment.
Volunteers from the Junction City-Geary County Animal Shelter then took turns in taking care of the dog. When the pooch arrived there, Nova was a frail dog. This prompted the volunteers to work extra time to gain back the dog’s weight.
In no time, the volunteers were successful with their goal as Nova saw an increased improvement on her body. Six months into her recovery, news came in, saying Nova could train and be a police dog.
Given her strong body stature, the dog is capable of training as a service dog. The dog was assigned with Lt. Justin Stopper to be her trainer. Stopper did not waste any time, and they both trained as soon as possible.
To gauge whether or not Nova is ready for the task, the dog’s skills were put to test. One of which is for her to find the things Stopper had thrown. Some of which include a scented bag, toy, and other items for the dog to be familiar with the job.
The dog, for her part, finished the hurdle with flying colors. Nova’s trainer is very proud of what the dog achieved. Amid her experiences in the past, the dog was able to find her new purpose. And that is being of service to other people.
