Luna immensely adores her pack of humans. She likes sharing playtime with them. Yes, she can’t get enough of the love and attention showered to her by her family.
Things get tricky when Luna’s family need to leave home to do “human” things. During these hours of separation, Luna badly misses each member of her family. It does not matter whether her family is only going out for a short trip to the groceries or if they will be out for eight hours straight for work or some extended errands.
Luna does not want her humans out of her sight. She does not want their scents out of her nose either. That is how attached she is to them.
On the one hand, this story is rather sweet. On the other hand, Luna might as well be diagnosed with canine separation anxiety. Yes, that’s a real thing and it must be dealt with appropriately.
Thankfully, Luna has come up with a viable strategy to make those hours of separation from her humans more bearable for her clingy canine heart. No, she does not bark her lungs out while waiting for them to return. She does not gnaw on the sofa cushions either.
Whenever Luna’s humans are away, she would collect their shoes and take them to her doggy bed. She then snuggles with these shoes. This allows Luna to still smell the scent of her human pack even when they are out of the house.
According to experts, dogs who suffer from separation anxiety need ways to cope with the distress they feel whenever they are left alone by their humans. One way to alleviate their stress is to leave them with a used shirt or some other “smelly” clothing item. Luna must have read this advice somewhere, hence her highly informed decision to snuggle with her humans’ shoes while they are away.
