It is always a heartwarming story whenever a shelter dog finds a new home. But what is more heartwarming is that long-time shelter dogs are given a chance at a new life through adoption. This is what happened to Ellie, a pooch who spent over 400 days inside the SafeHaven Humane Society in Oregon.

Ellie has a sad history before getting rescued by the animal shelter. The pooch was a former bait dog, and when her rescuers found her in 2018, Ellie was chained. The pooch was originally from Mexico and got transported to Oregon after her rescue.

It was a difficult transition for the pooch because she got used to the life of being a bait dog. But despite this, the volunteers from the animal shelter did not give up on the pooch. According to the volunteers, the hostile environment Ellie was previously part of affected the dog’s psyche.

However, due to the volunteers’ patience, the dog transformed into a lovable pooch. After the volunteers tamed the pooch, Ellie began to trust humans again. The dog likewise started playing with other dogs inside the animal shelter and built a good rapport with them.

The volunteers knew that it would be difficult for Ellie to be adopted. The reason for this is that adopters shun the idea of adopting dogs who are former bait dogs. This became the volunteers’ dilemma. But they knew that since the dog has already changed her ways, an adopter would come soon.

Ellie had to wait for over 400 days to get adopted, but according to the volunteers, the wait is worth it. While the animal shelter did not disclose the identity of the dog’s adopters, SafeHaven assured that the pooch is in safe hands. Before Ellie left the animal shelter, the volunteers held a simple but memorable send off to the pooch.
