An unknown Facebook user created an event inviting people to “storm area 51.” The event was supposedly a joke but has gained more than three million interested participants. The said event invited people all over the country to raid Area 51 on September 20, 2019. Area 51 is the US Air Force facility in the Nevada Test and Training Range which is rumored to be keeping proof of extra-terrestrial life.
The Storm Area 51 event gained a lot of attention. As of this posting, the event has been removed by Facebook. However, an animal shelter used that event’s popularity to gain attention from the online community.
OKC Animal Welfare Center used that same idea to get support from all over the country. They posted photos of their dogs dressed up as aliens. After a few days, the photos went viral with a hashtag #StormOurShelter.
I must say, those pups looked adorable in their alien costume. Talk about an easy and low-cost strategy to get people to notice the pets that are up for adoption in their shelter. And their plan worked. Their post was noticed and shared by people all over the world.
The shelter received an outpour of support. A week after they posted the photos, a lot of their dogs got adopted. Apart from adoption, many people who saw the post donated money to the shelter. The shelter received over $2,500 in donations.
The shelter did not disclose how many pets, both cats and dogs, were adopted since their post went viral. All they know is that the campaign was a big success. They are thankful to everyone who went out of their way to share the post, adopt, support, and donate to their shelter.
This is a great reminder for people to adopt instead of buying from breeders. Many loving dogs are left at shelters when their owners are unable to care for them. Those dogs deserve to get a second chance at having a forever home too.
