Meet Ernie, a Pitbull–terrier mix with such a big heart.
Ernie is just one of the shelter dogs waiting to be adopted and given his forever home. That was his situation until he decided to choose his new foster parent.
Cindy Grisanti is one of the many volunteer dog walkers at the City of Buffalo Animal Shelter in New York. She never thought dedicating her time to the shelter’s pups would change a dog’s life.
Grisanti was out with Ernie about a month ago for their morning walk when the big puppy stumbled upon a UPS van parked on the street. The driver, Jason Coronado, was taking his 10–minute break when the two arrived.
Even though it was their first encounter, Ernie seemed to have missed a precious friend when he saw Coronado.
“He was over the hills excited to see me, so I called him up (into the cabin),” said Coronado in an interview with The Dodo.
The two had a connection that appeared too impossible to break right then and there.

Coronado was seated on the steps of the van, and Ernie made his way. He just started licking off the driver’s face. According to Grisanti, it took her some time to convince the puppy to leave and continue their walk – he certainly needed a little more time with his newly found friend.
Several weeks after their accidental encounter, Coronado learned from a social media post that Ernie was still at the shelter. He felt sad that no one had taken the dog home, so he thought about it and spoke with his family.
Ernie was ready to go home with his new fur dad. Ernie knew that he had finally found his own family.
For Grisanti and the other volunteers who help homeless dogs find their forever homes, happy endings like this keep them striving.
Ernie and Conrado’s connection couldn’t be any better. It’s just perfect.
